A tale of two statues

FURD has entered into detailed discussions with the Football Association regarding signposting the educational resources available from the Arthur Wharton Heritage Project, accessible via www.arthurwharton.info.

Following the recent initiative to build a statue adjacent to Rotherham United’s New York Stadium, the FA are set to announce the venue for a second Wharton statue, developed by Darlington-based Shaun Campbell of the Arthur Wharton Foundation. The FA have welcomed the materials recently produced by FURD at an opportune time to assist pupils, students, teachers, coaches and the wider football family to fully explore the significance of Arthur’s fantastic story.

Howard Holmes of FURD commented: ‘It is brilliant news that there are to be not one, but two amazing statues to be unveiled in the Year of Arthur, 2014, in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of him becoming the first black professional footballer when signing for Rotherham Town in 1889. The release of FURD’s superb range of educational materials has come at the perfect time’.
